⚠️TW: TAXIDERMY HATS of Victorian Era. 🖤 Let's talk about rich people doing rich people's things. Shall we?
- Victorians are weird andfor whatever reason somewhere in fashion rich people decided feathers weren't good enough and they decided to wear THE WHOLE DEAD BIRD on their heads.
>> during Victorian era there was a huge scientific craze and many discoveries were done in the botanic, animal and mineral fields. So much so mineral, animal or vegetal was a popular guessing game.
With the specimens coming from all far sides of the earth taxidermy also made great advances and it wasn't seem as creepy as we see it now. It was considered scientific, intellectual and trendy.
🦇🖤😏 this badass bat lady is wearing an interesting piece of what it seems to be a combination of taxidermy and fabric. This is a costume used for a #fancyball . (GERMANY)
🐱Talking about #halloween Miss Kate Fearing Strong went to
Mrs. W. K. Vanderbilt’s fancy dress ball In 1849 as her nickname “Puss”.🐈 " Somewhat disturbingly, the entire costume consisted of a taxidermied cat head as seen in the image, but also seven cat tails sewn onto her skirt. " according to the Museum of the City of New York. It also has cat fur on the bodice. Yikes.
The craze of taxidermy hats wasn't just on Halloween, sadly people used to wear them ALL THE TIME. Some weird rich folks would wear exotic animals but that the majority were birds 🦅 so much so that in Britain they almost got an entire population of them to go extinct.
Birds like the snowy egret were highly sought after.
A CRUEL INDUSTRY - " The plume trade was a sordid business. Hunters killed and skinned the mature birds, leaving orphaned hatchlings to starve or be eaten by crows. “It was a common thing for a rookery of several hundred birds to be attacked by the plume hunters, and in two or three days utterly destroyed,” wrote William Hornaday, director of the New York Zoological Society and formerly chief taxidermist at the Smithsonian."🐣
A FEMINIST ALLY - In 1896 Harriet Hemenway and her cousin, Minna Hall, set off a revolt: they held tea parties for the wealthy women of Boston where they urged them not to wear feathered hats and invited them to join a society for the protection of birds... 🐤
Having gained the support of many of these fashionable women, Hemenway and Hall then organized meetings between leaders of the high society and prominent New England ornithologists, paving the way for the creation of the Massachusetts Audubon Society🦃
--which over 900 women joined this upper-crust boycott—
🚫 Their boycott of the trade would culminate in formation of the National Audubon Society and passage of the Weeks-McLean Law, also known as the Migratory Bird Act, by Congress on March 4, 1913 🕊
