Higanbana - Equinox Flower (彼岸花 or ヒ ガ ン バ ナ)

When I found this flower in our backyard I nearly had a heart-attack!

Lycoris radiata is the scientific name of this flower. In the United States is known as Red Spider Lily or Hurricane Lily. In Japan this is considered the flower of the other side (being the "other side" of the "other world" or "underworld") Higanbana (彼岸花 or ヒ ガ ン バ ナ) being "higan = other" and "bana = flower" because they say that it grows on the other shore of the river that leads to the underworld, the Sanzu river.

The higanbana bloomg in the autumn equinox and for so it's called the Flower of the Equinox (Equinox Flower) . Usually appears after storms and heavy rains, and for some reason it is common to bloom between the tombs in graveyards ... and it is often used at funerals.

The higanbana is also called the flower of the dead (死人 花 Shibito bana) and appear in anime usually associated with dead or with death-related characters such as Kikyo from InuYasha , Enma Ai from Hell Girl (Jigoku Shoujo), Madame Red from Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji) and many others. A beautiful and sad flower.

Because of its toxicity harmful to mice, farmers plant the flower between the paddy field (rice fields). And they say stems are edible to humans, this way being like a plan B if the planting goes wrong. 

The most common is the red, but also has yellow and white.

Some legends have it that when you see someone that you may never meet again, these flowers would bloom along the path.

Lycoris radiata é o nome científico dessa flor que nos Estados Unidos é conhecida como Lírio da aranha vermelha ou lírio do furacão. No Japão esta é considerada a flor do outro lado (sendo o "outro lado" o "outro mundo" ou "submundo") Higanbana (彼岸花 ou ヒガンバナ)  sendo "higan = outro" e "bana = flor", pois dizem que nasce no outro lado da margem do rio que leva ao submundo, o rio Sanzu.

A higanbana nasce no equinócio de outono e por isso é chamada de Flor do Equinócio. Costuma aparecer depois de tempestades e chuvas fortes, e , por alguma razão é comum nascer entre as tumbas em cemitérios... e por isso é muito usada em funerais .

A higanbana é também chamada de a flor dos mortos (死人花 Shibito bana ) e nos animes aparecem geralmente associadas a personagens mortas ou relacionadas com morte como a Kikyo de InuYasha, Enma Ai Hell Girl (Jigoku Shoujo), Madame Red de Kuroshitsuji e muitas outras. Uma bela e triste flor.

Por causa de suas toxicidade nociva aos ratos agricultores plantam a flor entre o arrozal. Dizem que os caules são comestíveis aos humanos, sendo assim um plano B caso o plantio vá mal. 

A mais comum é a vermelha, mas também tem amarela e branca.

Algumas lendas contam que quando você vê alguém que você nunca vai encontrar de novo, estas flores florescem ao longo do caminho.
